Redness that stays over 20 minutes — skin still marked long after the brace comes off is the first stage of a pressure sore.
Any broken skin or blister under the brace — especially where sensation is reduced and you may not feel it forming.
New numbness, tingling or coldness in the foot — a strap or shell may be compressing a nerve or blood vessel.
The knee buckling despite the brace — a joint, lock or alignment fault that will cause a fall if it is ignored.
Weakness that is clearly getting worse — new fatigue or strength loss in polio survivors can signal post-polio syndrome and changes the plan.
Sudden pain, swelling or heat in the leg — seek medical assessment the same day; this needs a doctor, not an orthotist.
